Middle Midhouse, Orkney

Our house has a breathtaking vantage point overlooking the Atlantic. It has underfloor heating, Aga, shower, hip baths, comfy beds, fresh linen, fibre wifi, film projector and delightfully quirky interior design. It would make a wonderful base for learning about neolithic sites such as Scara Brae, viking culture, the Old Man of Hoy and WW1 wrecks. The wildlife, rocks and beaches are amazing.

Style: Eccentric and lovely. You could see it as a cross between a glamping barn, a country home and a Spanish galleon. Most people love it. Over the years we have been very happy here with our families and children of all ages.

Activities: Great for trout fishing at the right times of year; neolithic history; viking legends; natural wonders; delicious lobster, beer, whisky, oatcakes and beef; wild swimming; rock climbing; huge walks; board games; reading; movie-watching and sleeping.

Accommodation: Suitable for one person/couple but also very comfortable for up to three couples with children. There is little sound insulation but three families can each have their own quarters. Everyone, however, has to share the same large bathroom/shower area.

Warnings: Not suitable for wheelchairs or anyone with mobility difficulties regrettably. There are some tricky staircases and two wood-burning stoves. We have new carbon monoxide detectors and fire alarms but in general the house demands good sense and care.

Finally: Orkney is a friendly community and a magical, unforgettable place.
