Middle Midhouse Cottage, Orkney
Middle Midhouse has lots of stairs, not many railings, is higgledy-piggledy and contains obstacles. Perhaps not good for the elderly or infirm. The design is eccentric. There are open fires. Despite new carbon monoxide and fire alarms, be cautious. Things break and get old and sometimes DIY skills are needed.
Having said that, we, with our babies and children, have all been very happy staying there over the past 30 years. The house is well loved. Views of the sea are stunning. The beds are comfy. When the winds howl you can read by the fire, cook on the Aga, watch movies, take long baths in a tin tub and listen to records. The wifi is very good.
